We are well into school year and hitting our stride with our everyday routine. We have our mornings down pat and I know I am not the only one that looks forward to our afternoons. Our afternoon routine took a little trial and error.

Do we do homework as soon as we get home? Or do we need a break for play? After many afternoons of fighting about homework, I quickly realized that we do in fact need that break.

After a long, hard day at school, the last thing my kids want to do is sit down at the dining room table and do their homework. They need a break. And you know what? I need the break too! The boys aren’t the only ones who take a break from work after school. I do too! After all, balanced and active play lays the foundation for a skilled, healthy, resilient, and successful society.

But first, we need a snack! My oldest is famished by the time he hits the house after school. I swear he’s eating his lunch but he acts like he hasn’t eaten in days. I had to find something that would fill him but wouldn’t ruin his appetite for dinner.

Once we have our snack, we are out the door enjoying the crisp fall weather with our friends! The moms catch up on the day and have an actual adult conversation while the kids run out their energy from the day. Before we know it, the sun is starting to go down and it’s time to go inside for dinner.

Now is the time for homework! While I am in the kitchen making dinner, the boys sit at the dining room table and get their work done. I can help them through our pass through window. By knocking out homework before dinner, we can enjoy a relaxing family night together.
