I’m in countdown mode people! In just two short weeks, our lazy summer routine will be out the window and the mad dash to get off to school will begin! I am dreading thinking about the getting two boys ready for school by 8 am. It sends shivers down my spine! One way that I am getting us all prepared is by trying out school lunch ideas. This is going to be our biggest battle this year! It’s the first time Ethan will be packing a school lunch every day and to say he’s a picky eater is an understatement.

However, I have found if I involve him in the process, the better chances I have of him liking the lunch!

Getting Kids Involved in School Lunches

Getting Kids Involved with School

1. Get a cool lunch box and accessories. Of course, I had in my mind the exact lunch box I wanted for him. But when he picked a different one out, I went with it. I also let him pick out some containers to keep his food separated (I told you he was picky). But they were his choices and he loved them!

2. Let them pick out their own food. At our most recent outing at Walmart, I let him choose the drinks for his school lunches. It was no surprise to me that he chose NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Ready to Drink Flavored Milk. The boy loves his chocolate milk but it’s not something I would have thought to pack!

3. Have them help pack the lunch. This is key! I have snacks pre-packaged and main meal options ready so he can help me pack his lunch. While I know he will eat a ham and cheese sandwich every day, that can get a little boring. We are also trying a Thermos out for the first time this year so he can bring warm food such as chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. This will also help us cut down on purchases made in the lunch line!

4. Have some fun with it! I found some cute school lunch notes to put instead to give him a little boost at lunch time. I’m also on the hunt for some fun sandwich cutters and silicone cupcake wrappers.

5. Treat yourself…for getting that lunch packed (and having them help)! Doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be as simple as some WONKA® NERDS®.

How do you get your kids involved with their school lunches?
